I AM Kriya

I AM Kriya

The I AM Kriya is a profound meditative practice in Kundalini Yoga that helps you anchor into your true identity—not just as a limited, individual being, but as an expression of the Infinite. Through the repetition of the mantra “I Am I Am”, this kriya bridges the gap between your personal self and your Universal Self, guiding your awareness toward a deeper, more complete experience of who you truly are.
The mantra is deceptively simple, yet deeply powerful:
-
The first “I Am” emphasizes the “I”—your finite identity: the roles you play, your name, body, personality, and life story.
-
The second “I Am” shifts the emphasis to “Am”—a subtle turn inward toward your infinite, impersonal Self—the presence beyond form, beyond time.
If you pause after the first “I Am,” the mind naturally asks, “I am what?” This question launches the mind into searching—through memories, identities, achievements, and roles—all the constructs that define your limited self. But when the second “I Am” follows, the question dissolves into truth: “I Am that I Am.” There is nothing more to add.
This is the essence of spiritual realization—to be exactly what you are, without needing to become anything else.
As the mantra is chanted, the hand movements and breath align in a steady rhythm, creating a neural and energetic pattern that strengthens your sense of Presence. This coordination between body, breath, and sound deepens your meditative state and helps train the mind to hold a larger identity, especially as your awareness begins to expand.
A yogi’s work is to maintain a connection between the finite self—which lives in time, space, and duality—and the Infinite Self, which simply exists. This kriya helps cultivate the habit of shifting perspective: from limitation to expansion, from ego to Essence.
